WHAT:  Kayaking Trip

WHEN:  Saturday, May 5, 2012, 8:45 AM – 3:00 PM (approximate end)

WHERE:  Conodoguinet Creek between Letort Falls Park and Willow Mill Park.

HOW:  Seven single kayaks are reserved for the Venture Crew participants through Carlisle Barracks’ Outdoor Recreation Office.  Flotation vests and paddles will be provided.  They might even have dry bags for us to borrow.

We’ll put in Conodoguinet Creek at Letort Falls Park at 9:00 AM; float downstream 4.6 miles (approx. 2 hours) to Scott’s Farm Work Center on the Appalachian Trail; lunch break at Scott’s Farm Work Center; we’ll then float downstream 5.5 miles (approx. 2 hours) to Willow Mill Park where we will pull kayaks from the water at approximately 3:00 PM

PARTICIPANTS:  Tommy, Ryan, Joelee, Caitlin, Brian, Brian’s mom (if needed), and a guide (guide has own kayak).

COSTS: $12/person for the kayak plus the cost of a U-Haul trailer rental divided by the number of Venture Crew participants.

MEALS:  Participants should bring own lunch for the stop at Scott Farm Work Center.  Also bring water.

SUPPLIES TO BRING:  Water shoes, gloves, water, hat, sun block, sun glasses, bug spray, toilet paper, Ziploc bags, change of clothing, towel.  Dress in layers. Avoid cotton.

TRANSPORTATION:  Participants should arrive at Letort Falls Park by 8:45 AM for the 9:00 AM departure.  The float trip will end at Willow Mill Park around 3:00 PM.  NOTE: participants might want to coordinate pre-positioning car(s) at Willow Mill Park.  Brian and his mom can take three participants from Willow Mill Park back to Letort Falls Park after the kayak trip ends.

Letort Falls Park – From Carlisle Barracks, drive north on Route 11 and turn left onto North Middlesex Road (Arby’s restaurant is at this intersection), cross over Conodoguinet Creek, turn right into paved parking lot immediately after bridge.

Scott Farm Work Center – From Carlisle Barracks, drive north on Route 11 and turn left onto Ridge Hill Road (a Hess gas station is at this intersection).  Turn left onto Bernheisel Bridge Road.  Cross Conodoguinet Creek.  Turn left into parking lot immediately after bridge (not well marked).

Willow Mill Park – From Carlisle Barracks, drive north on Route 11.  Turn left on the Conodoguinet Parkway/Route 114 (there are a Sheetz gas station, Olive Garden, and KFC at this intersection).  Turn left onto Willow Mill Park Road.  Go through one stop sign and take the first right into Willow Mill Park.  The parking area and boat ramp are at the far end of the park, past the picnic pavilion.

Alternate location in case weather does not cooperate:  Boiling Springs Lake.  Easy launch site, can get in 2 hours of easy paddling.

 

 

Top Secret: Crew 5 on mission at Area 4 2012 Summit

We all know that spies get all the best toys and do all kinds of exciting and fun stuff, while warding off double agents and protecting “good”. Of course, they also get to look good and attend awesome parties. Crew 5 will be doing this and more at:

Ultimate frisbee, shooting, mountain biking, geocaching, canoeing, climbing, tomahawk throwing, 3D Archery and a Presidential Ball to root out the potential threats to your cover.

We will meet at Grace Methodist Church and leave at 4:30 on Friday.
